New Tornado Watch until 7 PM for the WBRZ Viewing Area

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a NEW Tornado Watch until 7:00 PM for the WBRZ Viewing area.

Severe Weather Set-Up: A strong trough of low pressure will send a cold front toward Baton Rouge today from the west.  We will be breezy, very warm and humid ahead of it.  This will make it very unstable and scattered showers and storms will develop with the heating of the day.  Some of the storms could become strong to severe with the potential for a few tornadoes today.  Damaging winds are also likely with any storm that develops.  Downburst winds could be around 60+ mph at times.

Timing: The main portion of the storms will move into Baton Rouge around 3:00 PM and it will continue until 11:00 PM.  SPC has put all of the Baton Rouge area in a Slight Risk for severe weather today.

On top of the threat for severe weather, we will also have to deal with some heavy rain.  Rainfall totals could be around 1 to 3 inches by Friday Morning.  This may cause some flash flooding, but no major rive…

Strong to Severe Storms Possible On This Halloween

Happy Halloween!!

...Strong To Severe Storms & Heavy Rain Possible Today/Tonight...

Short Term Forecast:  We have a very warm and humid morning with mostly cloudy skies across Southeast Louisiana.  A few showers could move through town during the morning commute, but most of you will remain dry.

A strong trough of low pressure will send a cold front into Louisiana and through Baton Rouge today.  It will be very warm and humid ahead of the front and that will make the atmosphere unstable.  This will also allow for scattered showers and storms to develop during the afternoon hours.  Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds at times.  High temperatures will be in the lower 80s.

More numerous showers and thunderstorms will move into Baton Rouge during the Trick-or-Treat hours of 6 to 8 PM.  These storms have the potential to be strong to severe!!  Obviously, this isn't good for anyone going out to get candy.  There is a chance that the storms could hold off until after 8 P…

Unseasonably Warm Today With Storms Returning on Halloween

Short Term Forecast:  We have a partly to mostly cloudy Wednesday Morning with patchy fog around Baton Rouge.  Watch out for some low visibilities near 1/4 mile.  It is mild with temperatures in the 60s.

We will have another unseasonably warm afternoon across the Capital City.  High pressure is still off to the east of Louisiana and that is allowing southeasterly winds to pump in the warm and humid air over us.  It will become a little breezy later today with winds around 10 to 15 mph.  All of this moisture will give us a mix of sun and clouds with high temperatures in the mid 80s.

The clouds will linger over the city tonight and it will be pretty muggy.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 60s.

Halloween Forecast:  Unfortunately the weather does not look good for Halloween this year.  A trough of low pressure will send a cold front across the Baton Rouge area by Thursday Night.  We will have some scattered showers and storms popping up ahead of the front during the day tomorrow.  So…

Some clouds will stick around tonight along with areas of patchy fog.  It will be mild and a little muggy with low temperatures in the mid 60s.

A Warmer And More Humid Start To The Week

Short Term Forecast:  We have a much warmer and slightly more humid start to this Monday.  The skies are partly to mostly cloudy and there is some patchy fog.  Temperatures are in the lower 60s.

The warm and more humid air mass will stay over Baton Rouge today thanks to winds coming out of the southeast as an area of high pressure sits over us in the mid to upper levels.  This will lead to partly cloudy skies along with a spotty shower or two.  High temperatures will be in the lower 80s.

Some clouds will stick around overnight and it will be a little muggy.  Some patchy fog is also possible.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 60s.

Week Ahead:  The warm and humid air mass will stay over us on Tuesday and Wednesday as the mid to upper-level ridge stays over us.  This will continue to give us partly cloudy skies and warm high temperatures in the mid 80s.  Lows will be in the mid 60s each night with some lingering clouds.

The weather will be going downhill on Thursday, Halloween.  A …

Turning Much Cooler On Friday With Pleasant Weather This Weekend

Chilly Temperatures:  This morning we got down to 47° in Baton Rouge!  This was the first time we hit the 40s this season.  When you compare that to the last 5 years, this was pretty late in the season.  In 2012 we were in the 40s in early October!

Short Term Forecast:  We have some very comfortable weather across the Capital City on this Thursday Evening.  This skies are clear and temperatures will fall from the 70s into the 60s during the evening hours.  There is also some smoke around town thanks to the burning of the sugar cane fields.  Overnight, it will be clear and not as chilly as last night.  Low temperatures will be near 50.  You may still want that light jacket or sweater on Friday Morning.

A weak and dry disturbance, or short wave, will move across the Deep South early on Friday Morning.  This will not have any moisture to work with, so we will stay dry.  It will bring us a reinforcing shot of cooler air as an area of high pressure builds in behind it.  We will be sunny an…

Decreasing Clouds Today With Much Cooler Weather On The Way

Short Term Forecast:  We have a mostly cloudy morning across the Capital City with a few areas of mist and drizzle.  Temperatures are in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

A cold front will sweep through Baton Rouge by this afternoon.  This will put an end to any mist and clear out the clouds.  You can expect a mostly sunny afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 70s.

It will be mostly clear and much cooler tonight in the wake of the cold front.  Low temperatures will fall to the lower 50s around the city, but could be in the upper 40s north of town.

Week Ahead:  An area of high pressure will build across the Southeast U.S. starting on Wednesday.  This will give us sunny skies and cooler temperatures.  Highs will be in the lower to mid 70s on Wednesday, and Wednesday Night will have chilly low temperatures in the mid 40s!

More sunny skies are expected on Thursday and Friday as the area of high pressure sits north of Louisiana.  We will have a weak disturbance, or short wave, move acr…

Rain Returns Today And It Becomes Cooler On Wednesday

Short Term Forecast:  We start this Monday with partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures in the 50s.

Clouds will increase throughout the day as our next weather maker, an area of low pressure and warm front, move along the Louisiana Coast later today.  We will have a mix of sun and clouds with a few showers popping up later this afternoon and into the evening hours.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

The warm front will get to around I-10 and that will draw up some Gulf Moisture over Baton Rouge this evening.  This will help to set off some showers.  More rain will move inland tonight as the area of low pressure sits along the Louisiana Coast, and it will be moving off to the east.  We will have scattered showers around Baton Rouge, but the bulk of the rain will be south of I-10 tonight.  Some heavy rain can be expected for the Coastal Parishes.  Otherwise, we will be mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 50s.

Week Ahead:  The area of low pressure will move east of Louisiana …

Weekend Starts Wet, But Ends Dry

Short Term Forecast:  We have a much cooler start to the day across Southeast Louisiana.  It is partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 50s.  You may want that light jacket or sweater this morning!

We will have a pretty nice afternoon as a cold front is stalled along the Louisiana Coast.  You can expect to see a mix of sun and clouds with a few showers possible late in the day.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s.

The weather will go downhill tonight.  A disturbance/wave, or area of low pressure aloft, will form over Texas and move along the stalled cold front.  This will help to set off scattered showers and some thunderstorms overnight into Saturday Morning.  Some heavy rain will be possible, but mainly along the Coastal Parishes.  A few inches of rain is possible there.  Here in Baton Rouge we will just have scattered showers with some heavy downpours.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 50s.

Weekend Forecast:  It looks like we will start the weekend wit…

Unsettled And Cooler Weather Headed Our Way

Short Term Forecast:  A cold front is slowly making its way into Baton Rouge this morning.  We have mostly cloudy skies with isolated showers and mist popping up ahead and along it for the morning commute.  Temperatures are around 70.

We will see more showers and mostly cloudy skies through the early afternoon as the cold front moves into and through the city.  It will be a cooler day with highs in the upper 70s.

The front will stall along the Louisiana Coast tonight and that will be far enough south to temporarily end the rain.  We will have partly cloudy skies and it will become MUCH COOLER with lows in the upper 50s.

Most of Friday will be a decent day with partly cloudy skies.  We will start to see some showers popping up later in the day as an area of low pressure is forecast to form in the Western Gulf of Mexico along the stalled cold front.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

Plenty of rain and thunderstorms are expected on Friday Night into Saturday as the low moves a…

Warmer and More Humid Weather Has Returned

Short Term Forecast:  We will have a warm and muggy night across the Capital City with some dense fog for your Friday Morning Commute.  Low temperatures will be in the mid 60s.

Friday will be even warmer and more humid thanks to the ridge of high pressure moving east of Louisiana.  This will bring back southerly winds and they will pump in the moisture from the Gulf.  Expect the fog to dissipate by 9 AM and then the clouds will start to dissipate by 11 AM.  Then we will have partly cloudy skies during the after hours.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s.

Friday Night will be mostly clear, but we will have more dense fog forming by sunrise Saturday.  It will stay warm and muggy with lows in the mid to upper 60s.

Weekend Forecast:  The warm and humid weather sticks around all weekend.  We will be partly cloudy with only a very slight chance of a pop-up shower Saturday and Sunday.  High temperatures will be in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s each day.

Pleasant Weather Today, But Becoming More Humid Tomorrow

Short Term Forecast:  Once again we have a very pleasant start to the day with clear skies and cool temperatures in the 50s.  If you needed your jacket the last few mornings, you will want it again today.

The ridge of high pressure is still sitting over us this afternoon and that will keep the awesome weather in Baton Rouge.  We will be sunny and delightful just like the last few days.  However, it will be a little warmer with high temperatures back in the lower 80s.

We will not be as cool tonight compared to the last few nights.  This is thanks to some moisture that will start to return to the area from the Gulf.  This will give us mostly clear skies with patchy dense fog.  Low temperatures will be near 60.

Week Ahead:  The area of high pressure will move to the east of Louisiana starting on Thursday.  This will shift the winds from the north to the southeast and that will pump in the Gulf Moisture over us.  We will have partly cloudy skies on Thursday and Friday.  It will be much mor…

More gorgeous weather is in store for us today!  The ridge of high pressure remains over the Southern U.S.  This is still ushering in some light northerly winds over Baton Rouge and that is keeping our temperatures down.  It is also making it feel very comfortable with the low humidity.  We will be sunny again this afternoon with highs in the upper 70s.

Get ready for another cool and comfortable night.  We will be clear with low temperatures in the lower to mid 50s.  It will still be jacket weather when you wake up!

Week Ahead:  The area of high pressure will sit right over us on Wednesday, and that means we will have another fantastic day.  It will be sunny and a little warmer with highs in the lower 80s.  Wednesday Night will be clear and cool with lows in the upper 50s.

Finally A Taste of Fall In Baton Rouge

Short Term Forecast:  Many of you have been asking, "When we will finally get some cool weather in Baton Rouge?"  Well it is here on this Monday Morning!!  We have clear skies with unseasonably cool temperatures in the 50s!  That means temperatures are 15°-20° cooler this morning.  You may want that light jacket or sweater today!

A ridge of high pressure is following the cold front that swept across the state on Sunday.  This will give us sunny skies with MUCH COOLER temperatures and low humidity.  High temperatures will only be in the upper 70s.

Get ready for an even cooler and comfortable night across the Capital City with clear skies.  Low temperatures will still be unseasonably cool  in the lower 50s!

The Latest With Tropical Storm Karen, Plus Our Weekend Forecast

Latest Information:  Tropical Storm Karen showing the effects of wind shear and drier air this morning.   The wind shear is about 20-25 knots and that is preventing most of the thunderstorms from wrapping around the center of circulation.  That means the center is exposed (you can see that on the satellite image below) and at the moment the storm is a little weaker with winds of 60 mph, and the pressure is up to 1003 mb.  Karen is moving to the NNE at 10 mph.

There is a ridge of high pressure located to the east of Karen and it is riding along the western edge of it.  At the same time, a trough of low pressure will be sweeping across the U.S. and that draw Karen northward toward the Northern Gulf Coast.  The forecast models are still all over the place.  A few of them have it getting weaker and making a landfall over Louisiana, a few more keep the storm stronger and making a landfall more to the east over Florida.  NHC has taken a middle of the road approach to the official track.

Tropical Storm Karen Forms In the Gulf of Mexico

Latest Information: According to the latest info from the Hurricane Hunters, we now have Tropical Storm Karen in the Southern Gulf of Mexico.  Winds are sustained at 60 mph, pressure is 1005 mb and it is tracking to the north at 10 mph.  At the moment, this system is forecast to track to the north toward the Northern Gulf Coast States of LA to the FL Panhandle.  Tropical Storm and Hurricane Watches are in effect for the SE LA Coast through the Florida Panhandle.

Strength: Conditions are favorable today and tomorrow for some strengthening, and Karen is forecast to become a weak hurricane.  It will move over some warm Gulf waters and that is fuel for the storm.  However, as Karen approaches land the conditions will not be favorable by Saturday as it will move through some strong wind shear.  Also, there is a lot of dry air over the Central and Western Gulf, and this will limit the amount of strengthening.  The cold front is still forecast to move in this weekend, but looks to be a littl…

Some clouds will stick around tonight and we will see some patchy fog again.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s.

Friday will have more of the same weather - partly cloudy, warm and humid with isolated showers and storms.  High temperatures will be in the upper 80s and lows in the lower 70s on Friday Night with partly cloudy skies.
