Short Term Forecast: We have a pretty pleasant start to this Wednesday across the Baton Rouge area. The skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy with some haze. Temperatures are in the 70s.
The ridge of high pressure will remain over us today and that will keep us mainly dry. A stray shower is possible, but most of you will not see any rain. It will be hot and humid with high temperatures in the lower 90s.
Expect mostly clear skies tonight with some haze. It will be warm and a little muggy with low temperatures in the lower 70s.
Rest of the Week: The ridge of high pressure will be moving to the west on Thursday and Friday. This will keep us mainly dry with only a shower or two possible under partly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s.
Weekend Outlook: A trough of low pressure will move across the Northeast U.S. this weekend and it will send a cold front late on Friday into Saturday. This front will be pretty weak, but will have enough energy to set off isolated showers and storms on Saturday. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s.
The front will stall over the area on Sunday and an area of low pressure is forecast to form over the Bay of Campeche. This low will help to send some extra tropical moisture northward into Louisiana. This will all lead to a sun and cloud mix with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s.
Tropical Outlook: Tropical Storm Gabrielle is a little weaker today as it moves near Bermuda. Winds are down to 50 mph and the pressure is 1008 mb. It is moving to the NW at 8 mph and will slow down during the next 24 hours before turns north and heads out to sea on Thursday.
We now have our 1st hurricane of the 2013 season! Hurricane Humberto is located about 310 miles SW of the Cape Verde Islands. Winds have increased to 75 mph, pressure is 992 mb and it is moving to the NNW at 8 mph. Humberto is expected to turn to the north and speed up during the next 2 days. Humberto also becomes the 2nd latest forming 1st hurricane in the Atlantic Basin since 1950. The latest forming 1st hurricane was Gustav in 2002 when it formed on September 11th at 8 AM.
I'm also watching a trough of low pressure located along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize. It is disorganized and will move over the Yucatan today. Then it will emerge in the Bay of Campeche on Thursday. Some development is possible tomorrow according to the forecast models and a tropical depression could form by the weekend since upper-level winds are favorable and the waters are warm. Thanks to a new ridge of high pressure building over the U.S. this weekend, this should keep this system in the Bay of Campeche and away from Louisiana. However, some of the moisture associated with this low could stream toward LA and increase our chance for rain.
Elsewhere...the rest of the tropics are quiet.
Be sure to keep cool and have a good day! -Dave
