Short Term Forecast: We have a partly cloudy start to the day across the Capital City with some coastal showers and thunderstorms. Some rain will start popping up around Baton Rouge during the morning hours and it will become scattered by the afternoon. We start the day with muggy temperatures in the 70s.
You can expect another afternoon with scattered showers and thunderstorms. This is thanks to a stalled front located north of Louisiana plus daytime heating with all of the Gulf Moisture sitting over us. Any storm could be strong with gusty winds and have heavy rain. Otherwise, we will have a mix of sun and clouds with high temperatures in the lower 90s.
We will be mostly cloudy tonight with overnight showers and storms developing as a cold front moves closer to Louisiana. Lows will be in the mid 70s.
Week Ahead: A trough of low pressure will push a cold front, yes a cold front, into Baton Rouge on Wednesday. This is rare for mid-August, but it can happen. This front will tap into the deep tropical moisture over us and that will set off scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain. Some flash flooding will also be possible. High temperatures will struggle to get to 90. Wednesday Night will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and storms as the cold front pushes to the Louisiana Coast. Lows will fall to the lower 70s.
Thursday will start off with some lingering showers and storms, but we will become partly cloudy by the afternoon as the cold front stalls in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Some drier air will move in behind the front, and that will help to lower the humidity a bit. High temperatures will be around 90. Thursday Night will have a few clouds and it will not be as muggy. We will actually be a tad "cooler" with lows in the upper 60s!
Friday will turn out to be a mostly dry day with partly cloudy skies and only a very slight chance for a shower. It will be less humid too. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the upper 60s on Friday Night.
Weekend Outlook: The cold front will remain stalled across the Northern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Some drier air will stay over the Baton Rouge area each day. This will limit the amount of rain we will see. Expect partly cloudy skies with only spotty showers possible on Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s.
Tropical Outlook: I'm still watching the tropical wave and broad area of low pressure located in the Central Caribbean. Upper-level winds are going to become more favorable for development over the next few days as it moves to the west. The GFS is forecasting it to become an area of low pressure and it gets pulled into the Gulf of Mexico by the cold front/trough of low pressure. The ECMWF keeps it a tropical wave and moves it into the Yucatan Peninsula. Needless to say, I will keep an eye on it over the next few days to see how it evolves.
Elsewhere...the rest of the tropics are quiet and they will stay that way through Wednesday.
