Short Term Forecast: We have a partly to mostly cloudy start to this 4th of July, Thursday with temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
We will have a pretty nice afternoon across the Capital City, but you will still need to keep an eye to the sky for some storms. The upper-level trough of low pressure will be pulling to the northwest and that will help to limit the amount of rain we get today. Expect partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and storms popping up with the heating of the day. Highs will be around 90.
Some clouds will stick around tonight making it mostly cloudy and muggy. Coastal showers and storms will also be likely. Lows will be near 70.
Get ready for some soggy weather to arrive on Friday. High pressure will be sitting along the East Coast of the U.S. and that will pump in plenty of Gulf Moisture. At the same time, the upper-level trough will be still moving northwest. Combine that with daytime heating and we will have scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms popping up. Highs will be in the upper 80s. Friday Night will be mostly cloudy with a few showers possible. Lows will be in the lower 70s.
Weekend Forecast: It does not look like we will have a nice weekend. You need to prepare for some heavy rain each day. As the area of high pressure sits along the East Coast, an area of non-tropical low pressure is forecast to form in the Western Gulf of Mexico. It will drift northward toward Louisiana on Saturday, and this will spread numerous showers and storms over Baton Rouge with heavy rain. Highs will be in the upper 80s. Saturday Night will have some showers and clouds with lows in the lower 70s.
The low will drift inland over Louisiana on Sunday, and this looks to be the day with the heaviest rain. Some flash flooding can't be ruled out. The forecast models are showing we could pick up 1-3+ inches of rain! High temperatures will only climb into the mid 80s. The bulk of the rain will end on Sunday night with mostly cloudy skies and lows in the mid 70s.
Tropical Outlook: I'm still watching a broad trough of low pressure located from the Yucatan Peninsula to Florida. Upper-level winds are not favorable for development of this system during the next couple of days. However, the forecast models are showing that it could form into a non-tropical low by the weekend in the Western Gulf. This will spread heavy rain all along the Southeast U.S. over the next few days. NHC is giving it a low chance of development.
Elsewhere...the rest of the tropics are still quiet, and they will stay that way through Friday.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July! -Dave
