...Winter Weather Advisory For The Baton Rouge Area From 6 PM to 9 AM Friday...
Wintry Weather: A cold front is moving across the southern part of Louisiana this afternoon. At the same time, there is a trough of low pressure in the Western Gulf of Mexico that is setting off scattered showers over Eastern Texas into Western Louisiana.
The forecast models are now showing a little more moisture coming in from the trough in the Gulf. This is sending the moisture into cold air and that is why there is a little better chance of seeing some wintry weather verses what we saw yesterday. However, there is also some dry air near the surface, and this may help to evaporate any wintry precipitation that may fall.
Temperatures are expected to fall to the freezing point later this evening across Western Louisiana, and that will allow the rain to be mixed with sleet and snow from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge to the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Right now the rain has changed over to sleet and light snow across North Louisiana.
Due to the threat for some issues with winter weather, the NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the Baton Rouge area.
Here is my thinking of who will be affected and what type of accumulations are possible:
Baton Rouge Area: The changeover from rain to sleet/snow should occur around 10 PM along and north of I-10 and I-12. The sleet/snow will continue overnight, but what sleet/snow does fall will changeover to rain during the morning commute.
There is a chance for some light sleet/snow accumulations along and north of I-10/12 west of I-55. A 1/2 inch of sleet/snow is possible especially on grassy areas and rooftops. Watch out for some slick spots on roadways and bridges/overpasses.
Northshore: You can expect some light rain tonight, but it could mix with some sleet and a few snow flurries overnight. No accumulations are expected. Watch out for some slick spots on roadways and bridges/overpasses.
New Orleans & South: I am not expecting much, if any, wintry precipitation across the New Orleans Metro Area and cities south toward the coast. The city may see some sleet pellets or snow flurries overnight and on Friday. No accumulations are expected. There is also a chance for some rain mixed with sleet on Friday Night across the same areas with no accumulation.
NOTE: there is a much better chance that nothing happens verses seeing snow!
Wind Chills: On top of the threat for some wintry precipitation, the winds will be howling tomorrow too! Temperatures will be in the 20s across Baton Rouge to Slidell and into New Orleans. Winds will be out of the northeast at 10 to 20 mph. Wind Chills will be in the teens to lower 20s on Friday Morning! BUNDLE UP!!
