Arctic Blast Arrives Today In Baton Rouge

...Freeze Warning from Until 9 AM Monday...
...Wind Chill Advisory Until Noon Monday...
...Hard Freeze Warning from 6 PM Monday Until 9 AM Tuesday...

Arctic Blast:  I hope you are ready for some of the coldest temperatures since 2010 to affect the Baton Rouge area!!  While we will be no where near as cold as our friends and family in the Northern U.S., we will still be very cold for Louisiana.  Now that the cold front has moved through the state, the cold air is making its way into Baton Rouge.  We are starting out this Monday Morning in the lower 30s to upper 20s with breezy northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph.  This will give us a Wind Chill as cold as 15 degrees at times.  BUNDLE UP as you head out the door today - both kids at the bus stop and adults too!

There is a little change in the forecast from yesterday...some clouds will be sticking around today verses a total clear out of them.  This will help to filter the sunshine and it will not warm up much this afternoon.  We will only have high temperatures in the mid to upper 30s, so it will stay cold ALL DAY!  Some places north of Baton Rouge may not get much above freezing.

There is another change to the forecast tonight.  Since we will have some clouds lingering over the city as they move in from the west, it may not get quiet as cold tonight.  HOWEVER, it will still be VERY COLD as the Arctic air will arrives.  You can expect mostly clear skies with low temperatures around 20.  This is a little "warmer" than previously thought.  The record low on Tuesday is 20 set back in 1970 and we will very likely get to that!  It is worth noting that if we do have clear skies and calm winds, then there will be very good radiational cooling of the Earth, and then we could get down into the TEENS.  This is something I will be watching closely tonight.

By the way...Last time it was this cold in Baton Rouge was in January of 2010.  We had 3 night of temperatures in the teens.  It was even below 32 degrees for over 24 hours.  This lead to some ice forming on the LSU and City Park Lakes!  Not sure we will see ice again this time since the cold blast will not last very long.

More Cold Temps. Tuesday:  An area of high pressure will sit over us on Tuesday and that should be able to get rid of the clouds.  We will be sunny, but it is going to remain very cold with high temperatures only in the upper 30s.

Tuesday Night will remain clear, but it will not be as bitter cold.  However, it will still be VERY COLD with lows in the lower to mid 20s.

Always remember the "P's":  Be sure to wrap any exposed pipes outside of your home!  This cold blast may be cold enough to burst some pipes - especially in areas that may not get above freezing on Monday.  PLEASE have a warm place for any outdoor pets.  Lastly, check on those people that may not have any heat.

Rest of The Week Warming Trend:  Fortunately, this cold blast will not last very long - only Monday and Tuesday.  The area of high pressure that will sit over us on Tuesday will move to the east of Louisiana on Wednesday.  This will take the coldest air with it, and we will start to warm up with highs in the 50s.  High temperatures will continue to climb into the 60s by the end of the week ahead of another cold front.  We will also see some rain on Friday and Saturday.

Be sure to keep it tuned to WBRZ and all of its outlets as well as my Facebook and Twitter feeds.  Links to them are on the right side of the screen.  Stay warm and stay safe!  -Dave

Major Snowstorm Headed To Northeast US Tomorrow

For all of my friends and family that live in the Northeast US...here is my latest analysis of the winter storm heading your way on Friday into Saturday: The same area of low pressure that brought the heavy rain and thunderstorms to Louisiana last night and this morning will be moving up the East Coast on Friday.  It will get much stronger and become a  Nor' Easter that will impact all the major cities from Philly to NYC to Boston as well as inland areas. Delmarva to NJ Coastal Areas :  Winter Storm Warning in effect from Friday AM until Saturday AM!  It looks like it will start out as a brief period of snow along the coast in the morning then change into a windy rain during the day.  Then go to a heavy snow late Friday into Saturday Morning.  Snow accumulations of 4-8" are possible.  Some minor ice accumulations are possible too. Winds will be sustained around 30+ mph and coastal erosion will be possible too. NE PA : Winter Storm Warning from 10...

The Unseasonably Cool Weather Continues

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very cold morning across the Capital City with clear skies and temperatures in the 30s.  A light freeze is expected!  I hope that you brought in your plants last night.  Take that jacket with you this morning. An area of high pressure remains over the Southeast U.S. today.  This will keep us sunny and with the northwest winds over us, we will stay cool.  High temperatures will be in the upper 50s. Another freeze is expected tonight for the Baton Rouge area.  We will be clear with calm winds and very good radiational cooling.  Low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s.  The NWS has issued a Freeze Warning for areas along and north of the I-10/12 corridor from 2 AM to 8 AM Wednesday Morning.  The freeze could last 2 to 6+ hours and that would be long enough to kill any vegetation.  Make sure you bring in your plants or at least cover them tonight!  Bundle ...

Today Is The 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Gustav

Early in the morning on September 1, 2008, Labor Day, Hurricane Gustav made landfall near Cocodrie, LA.  It was a strong category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds.  At one point, right before Gustav made landfall over Western Cuba, winds were as high as 150 mph (Category 4).  It did weaken as it crossed Cuba, but did regain strength as it sat in the middle of the Gulf as it became a Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph.  This storm became the worst one ever to impact Baton Rouge, LA.  Sustained winds around 70 mph with a 91 mph wind gust was reported at Baton Rouge Metro Airport, 108 and 117 mph wind gusts were reported in Houma, LA.  That caused significant damage and, at one point, the entire city of Baton Rouge was without power. Hurricane Gustav moved slowly inland and the eastern-edge of the eye wall moved along the Mississippi River into Baton Rouge.  It continued northward through West Feliciana & Pointe Coupee Parishes.  The worst...
