MUCH COLDER and Rainy Weather Today

Short Term Forecast:  The cold front has moved through Baton Rouge this morning and the temperatures are falling fast!  We had our high temperature of 73° around 1 AM and the temperatures will be falling through the 50s all morning.  Scattered showers are also moving through town and that will continue all morning.

Be sure to bundle up as you head to work and school today!  The cold front will move toward the Louisiana Coastline today and a disturbance will move over us from the west.  In the wake of the front we will continue to see the temperatures fall and more scattered showers will develop as the disturbance passes over us.  The temperatures will be around 50 in the middle of the afternoon and they will fall into the 40s by the evening.

The rain will start to taper off tonight and we will have a brief lull in the precipitation.  Expect cloudy skies and it will be very cold tonight with lows in the lower 30s.  Baton Rouge should stay just above freezing, but from the Felicianas to South Mississippi your lows will be around 32°.  At this time, it looks like we will not have any frozen precipitation falling, but some of the road could have a few icy spots.

Weekend Forecast:  The cold and wet weather will stick around all weekend!  The cold front will stall along the coast on Saturday.  We will continue to see cloudy skies with scattered showers during the day, but it will not rain the entire day.  High temperatures will only get to the lower 40s.  Saturday Night will be cloudy with some showers.  Lows will only drop a few degrees and stay in the lower 40s.

The front will retreat back to the north as a warm front on Sunday, but it will not get to Baton Rouge.  Therefore, we will not warm up much, but the New Orleans area will be much warmer.  You can expect plenty of clouds with scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms.  Highs in Baton Rouge will be in the mid 50s.  Sunday Night will continue to have scattered showers with lows in the upper 40s.

SWAC Championship:  If you are headed to Houston to cheer on Southern University then plan for some rain and cold weather.  Fortunately, the game is in Reliant Stadium so the weather will not be an issue.  However, if you are tailgating it will be cloudy with scattered showers in the morning and temperatures in the upper 30s.  At the 1 PM kickoff, it will still be cloudy with scattered showers and temperatures will only get to around 40, but indoor temperatures will be around 72°.  Go Jags!!!!

Next Week Outlook:  The rainy weather will still be over Baton Rouge on Monday until another cold front will push through on Monday Night/Tuesday Morning.  Then we will start to finally dry out!  Monday will have scattered showers with highs in the lower 50s and lows in the upper 30s.

Sunshine returns on Tuesday with dry weather.  It will be chilly with high temperatures only in the mid 40s and lows in the lower 30s Tuesday Night.

An area of high pressure will sit over us on Wednesday and Thursday.  This will keep it sunny, but it will stay cool with highs in the lower 50s and lows in the mid 30s to near 40.

Another cold front and disturbance will move into Baton Rouge on Friday and this will bring back some rain. It will become warmer with highs in the lower 60s.

Comparison between Hurricane Matthew's possible forecast track loop vs Hurricane Betsy's

Some of you have been calling to say that Matthew's forecast to do a loop in the Atlantic Ocean off the SE U.S. is the same as what Hurricane Betsy did back in 1965. Well...that is not true. Betsy formed on August 27, 1965 just off the Leeward Islands. It quickly became a tropical storm on the same day, and then became a hurricane on August 29.  It made a few loops in its track with one north of Puerto Rico and a second north of the Bahamas.  There is a strong area of high pressure that was preventing Betsy from moving to the north, and that is what caused it to loop.  After the second loop, it then moved SW across the Bahamas, then turned west to move over far South Florida and then into the Gulf.  It eventually turned to the NW and quickly tracked right to New Orleans where it made landfall as a major hurricane on September 9th. Hurricane Matthew formed in the Atlantic east of the Leeward Islands as a tropical storm on September 28. It quickly moved west into t...

The Great Flood of 1983

It was 30 years ago that the Baton Rouge area experienced what is likely the worst flood in its history!  On April 5-9, 1983 we were hit with 6 to 13 inches of rain from a slow-moving storm.  This rain quickly ran off into the Amite, Comite, Tickfaw and Tangipahoa River Basins.  Some of the highest rainfall totals were in the headwaters of the Amite River in the Felicianas and South Mississippi.  Also, there were some strong easterly winds which slowed down the water from draining into Lake Maurepas and Pontchartrain.  These were some of the reasons why the flooding occurred in Baton Rouge & Denham Springs.  The weather map to the right shows the weather for April 8, 1983. A stalled front over the Southeast U.S. lead to the heavy rain event and flooding. The rivers quickly rose and spilled out of their banks.  The rain didn't stop, so the water continued to rise and rise.  Rivers rose to what are still the record levels.  The Amite in D...

The Unseasonably Cool Weather Continues

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very cold morning across the Capital City with clear skies and temperatures in the 30s.  A light freeze is expected!  I hope that you brought in your plants last night.  Take that jacket with you this morning. An area of high pressure remains over the Southeast U.S. today.  This will keep us sunny and with the northwest winds over us, we will stay cool.  High temperatures will be in the upper 50s. Another freeze is expected tonight for the Baton Rouge area.  We will be clear with calm winds and very good radiational cooling.  Low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s.  The NWS has issued a Freeze Warning for areas along and north of the I-10/12 corridor from 2 AM to 8 AM Wednesday Morning.  The freeze could last 2 to 6+ hours and that would be long enough to kill any vegetation.  Make sure you bring in your plants or at least cover them tonight!  Bundle ...
