Short Term Forecast: We have a pretty warm and muggy Thursday Morning with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the 70s.
The ridge of high pressure that has been sitting over us the last few days will build to the west today. This will keep us mainly dry and hot with partly cloudy skies. A few showers are possible, but I'm not expecting many of you to see rain. High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 90s.
A few clouds will linger over the city tonight and it will stay warm. Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s.
The weather will start to change a little on Friday. A trough of low pressure in the upper-levels of the atmosphere will move down along the Eastern U.S. This will send a cold front toward and through Baton Rouge. The front will arrive late in the day and it will help to set off a few showers. Therefore, we will be partly cloudy and hot with a few showers. Highs will be in the lower 90s. Friday night will be partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers as the cold front stalls along the Louisiana Coast. Lows will be in the lower 70s.
Weekend Outlook: The front will continue to stall along our coast. At the same time, an area of low pressure will be moving across the Bay of Campeche. This low will send some tropical moisture toward Louisiana all weekend and that will help to set off a few showers. Saturday and Sunday will both be partly cloudy with isolated showers and a few storms. Highs will be in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s each day.
Tropical Outlook: Gabrielle is now a tropical depression. It is located about 190 miles WNW of Bermuda with 35 mph winds. The pressure is 1010 mb. The depression will move to the NNE over the next few days toward Nova Scotia. It may become a tropical storm again, but it will stay out at sea.
Hurricane Humberto continues to be well organized as it sits around 440 miles NW of the Cape Verde Islands. Winds are 85 mph and the pressure is 982 mb. It is moving to the N at 14 mph and will turn to the NNW to WNW over the next few days as it moves out to sea. It is also forecast to weaken over the cooler waters.
Lastly, I'm watching an area of low pressure (Invest 93L) located over the Yucatan Peninsula. It will emerge into the Bay of Campeche later today or tonight. As long as it remains over water, there is a chance this low could form into a tropical depression by the weekend. The forecast models show it moving to the west and into Mexico. However, some moisture could stream north toward Louisiana early next week from this system. This would increase the chance of rain over Baton Rouge, but we would not be directly impacted by this system.
Elsewhere...there is a broad area of low pressure located 550 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Conditions could become somewhat favorable for development over the next few days as it moves to the west and northwest. NHC is giving it a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 5 days.
Have a great day and stay cool in this heat! -Dave
