Short Term Forecast: We have a very warm start to this Tuesday with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 60s. It is pretty breezy too with winds out of the southeast at 5 to 15 mph.
We will be unseasonably warm and pretty windy this afternoon as strong southerly winds pump in the warm/humid air from the Gulf. Winds will be around 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. This will give us mostly cloudy skies and we could have a few light rain showers or sprinkles popping up. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s.
It will remain mostly cloudy, warm and windy tonight. Lows will be in the upper 60s to around 70.
Week Ahead: A cold front will move into North Louisiana on Wednesday and that will set off some isolated showers and thunderstorms ahead of it in Baton Rouge. Some of the storms could become strong to severe at times with large hail and damaging winds. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy, warm and windy with highs in the lower 80s. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.
The weather will go downhill on Wednesday Night/Thursday as the cold front moves into Baton Rouge. We will likely have a squall-line of storms moving into town and they will be strong to severe. Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes will be possible. Lows will be in the mid 60s.
The GFS model shows the front moving through Baton Rouge by midday, but the EURO has it moving through by Thursday Night. At this point, I will take a blend of the two and say the front will be through the city by the afternoon. The showers and storms will continue until the front passes through town. These storms could still be strong to severe! SPC has much of Louisiana in a Slight Risk for severe weather. Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes will be possible until the front moves through. Plus, we will have some heavy rain with about 2 to 4 inches, and this could cause some flash flooding. High temperatures will be lower 70s. Thursday Night will become mostly clear and much colder. Lows will be in the upper 40s.
An area of high pressure will build over the Southeast U.S. on Friday. This will make it sunny and pleasant. We will not become much cooler behind the front with highs in the mid 70s and lows near 50 on Friday Night.
Weekend Outlook: Right now it looks like the weekend will start out pretty nice, but it will end with some rain. Saturday will be sunny and warmer with highs in the upper 70s. Saturday Night will be mostly clear and mild with lows in the mid 50s.
The old cold front looks like it will retreat back to the north as a warm front on Sunday. This will warm it up and make it more humid with partly cloudy skies. It will also set off isolated showers during the day. Highs will be around 80 and lows in the lower 60s.
Enjoy the warm temperatures and hold onto your hats! Have a great day! -Dave
