Warm and More Humid Today With A Few Showers

Short Term Forecast: We have a much warmer morning with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s under mostly cloudy skies.


The clouds will stick around today as southeast winds, on the backside of an area of high pressure, pump in the warm and more humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.  Spotty showers are also possible today, but not all of you will see rain.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

A warm and muggy night is on tap with mostly cloudy skies.  A few showers will still be possible too along with some patchy fog.  Low temperatures will be in the mid 60s.

The warm and humid air mass will stay over us on Friday as we sit ahead of a cold front.  As the front moves closer to Baton Rouge, scattered showers and a few storms will pop-up later in the day.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.  Friday Night will be cloudy with scattered showers and a few storms.  Lows will be near 60.

Weekend Forecast:  The forecast models are not in total agreement of how much rain we will get on Saturday as the front moves through town.  Some are saying not much at all while others say we'll have scattered showers.  Here is what I'm thinking...the cold front will move through during the morning hours and we will have scattered showers along the front.  It looks like some rain will also occur once the front passes by Baton Rouge with plenty of cloud cover.  These showers may linger into the evening hours, but are expected to be light.  As for temperatures...our high for the day will be around 60 and it will occur in the morning.  Then temperatures will slowly fall throughout the afternoon into the lower 50s.  If you are headed to the LSU game plan for it to be a raw day with a few showers and temps. in the 50s.


The rain will end on Saturday Night and we will become partly cloudy.  It will be MUCH COLDER with lows in the upper 30s.

An area of high pressure will move over Louisiana on Sunday.  This will make it sunny, but it will rain very cool with highs only in the mid 50s.  Sunday Night will be clear and COLD with lows in the mid 30s.  Some patchy frost will be possible.  Areas in Southern Mississippi to the Upper Florida Parishes could see temperatures closer to freezing.

Tropical Outlook:  Tropical Storm Melissa is still holding on to its tropical characteristics as it sits about 625 miles west of the Azores Islands.  Winds are sustained at 50 mph and it is racing to the ENE at 32 mph.  It will continue on this track and lose its tropical characteristics tomorrow.

Elsewhere...the rest of the tropics are quiet and will stay that way through Friday.

The Unseasonably Cool Weather Continues

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very cold morning across the Capital City with clear skies and temperatures in the 30s.  A light freeze is expected!  I hope that you brought in your plants last night.  Take that jacket with you this morning. An area of high pressure remains over the Southeast U.S. today.  This will keep us sunny and with the northwest winds over us, we will stay cool.  High temperatures will be in the upper 50s. Another freeze is expected tonight for the Baton Rouge area.  We will be clear with calm winds and very good radiational cooling.  Low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s.  The NWS has issued a Freeze Warning for areas along and north of the I-10/12 corridor from 2 AM to 8 AM Wednesday Morning.  The freeze could last 2 to 6+ hours and that would be long enough to kill any vegetation.  Make sure you bring in your plants or at least cover them tonight!  Bundle ...

Today Is The 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Gustav

Early in the morning on September 1, 2008, Labor Day, Hurricane Gustav made landfall near Cocodrie, LA.  It was a strong category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds.  At one point, right before Gustav made landfall over Western Cuba, winds were as high as 150 mph (Category 4).  It did weaken as it crossed Cuba, but did regain strength as it sat in the middle of the Gulf as it became a Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph.  This storm became the worst one ever to impact Baton Rouge, LA.  Sustained winds around 70 mph with a 91 mph wind gust was reported at Baton Rouge Metro Airport, 108 and 117 mph wind gusts were reported in Houma, LA.  That caused significant damage and, at one point, the entire city of Baton Rouge was without power. Hurricane Gustav moved slowly inland and the eastern-edge of the eye wall moved along the Mississippi River into Baton Rouge.  It continued northward through West Feliciana & Pointe Coupee Parishes.  The worst...
