The National Weather Service has named June 23-29th as Lightning Safety Awareness Week. During this week the NWS will be sending out reminders on how to keep safe from lightning.
Did you know that Louisiana is ranked #6 in the country for average lighting strikes between 1997-2011? It is behind Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas. That is according to the NWS/Vaisala. However, Louisiana is ranked #2 in lightning flashes per square mile behind Florida. We can thank the Summer-time sea breeze for giving Florida and Louisiana all of the storms. For more on these stats, check out this website.
