Short Term Forecast: It is a foggy start to the day with visibilites less than 1/4 mile at times. Please use caution as you travel around town! Otherwise, it is mostly clear and chilly with temperatures in the 40s.
The fog will dissipate later this morning and we will be left with a mix of sun and clouds. The fog and clouds are due to more moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico as the winds have shifted from the northeast to the east. We will become warmer today with highs in the lower 70s.
Expect more patchy dense fog tonight with partly cloudy skies. It will be mild with lows only falling to the lower 50s.
Weekend Forecast: Saturday will start out foggy, but we will be partly cloudy and warm by the afternoon. A weak trough of low pressure will move across the state and that will help to keep some of the clouds around. It will be even warmer with highs in the mid 70s. Saturday Night will be foggy and mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 50s.
More of the same weather is on tap for Sunday. We will have a mix of sun and clouds once the fog dissipates. Highs will be in the upper 70s. Sunday Night will be mostly cloudy with some fog. Lows will be in the upper 50s.
Next Week Outlook: Monday will continue to be warm with partly cloudy skies as an area of high pressure sits over the East Coast and continues to pump in Gulf Moisture. Highs will be in the upper 70s. Monday Night will be mostly cloudy with a few showers popping up as a cold front moves into Louisiana. Lows will stay in the upper 50s.
The cold front will move into Baton Rouge on Tuesday and it will set off isolated showers and a few thunderstorms. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy and warm ahead of the front with highs in the mid 70s. The cold front will move through the city on Tuesday Night with isolated showers. Lows will be in the upper 50s.
The rain will come to an end on Wednesday and we will become mostly sunny as an area of high pressure builds in behind the front. It will be a little cooler with a high around 70. Wednesday Night will be mostly clear and cool with a low near 50.
The high pressure quickly moves to the east of Louisiana on Thursday and Friday. This will allow us to warm up quickly and have some clouds returning. Each day will be partly cloudy with highs in the lower to mid 70s and lows in the lower 50s.
Tropical Outlook: Today is the last day of the 2012 Hurricane Season. We had an active one with 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane. The main highlights of the season included Hurricane Isaac that hit Louisiana and Hurricane Sandy that hit New Jersey and the Northeast U.S. Both were weak hurricanes, but they did some major damage and flooding. This season is the 3rd straight active one with 18 named storms in 2011 and 19 named storms in 2010.
Fortunately, all areas of the tropics are quiet and tropical cyclone formation is not expected through the weekend.
This will be the LAST tropical update I will add to my weather blog, UNLESS a storm pops up. Then I will add a special update to include that.
Enjoy the warmer temperatures and have a great weekend! -Dave
